Music And Internet: The Relationship From Space!

Conceptual Ideas About Music

Okay, you are not really a complete animal until you learn how to sing like a futuristic one.

In other words, you play an instrument.

The world should encourage you to record and share what you produce with that.  I'm a part of that world.

But you don't want to get used for your songs.
That's fair.  You don't want to become obscure or un-noticed.  That's clear, as well.  You'd like it if you could collaborate with the perfect people, but they're never really around when you need them.
Until Now.

That's what I'm introducing.  It's a channel for you to upload all of your audio clips of yourself playing music.  You are limited to a certain amount of file size.  It will start smaller than an MPC2000 as to what that size is, in case you would like a hint, at first.  The success depends on the involvement by paid subscribers, who are reimbursed for their payment, as well as potentially given royalties, for the music that they create in the community.

We can start with New Haven.

Step One is a pilot program.  This essentially works as such that you are to get a group of musicians together, by giving them FTP hosts, passwords, and the skills (knowledge of how to ulpoad songs to the server).  They will also be given a set of key commands.  That are, for example, you must name the file by the type of swing it has, by percent, using your best judgement.  What key you think it's in, hopefully having tuned your instrument.  And the tempo in BPM, if you would also, as well.  That way, other artists can browse the network seaching for "Cello"

The other thing is that members can borrow from other members, and this serves as "Credits."  Credits can work in either direction.  it's important to offer and give as much as it is to receive.

That "cello" brings up the awesome cello artist, Nathaniel Botranger Merriweather III.  Take that folder and you find also the key and tempo you need for your musical piece.

There is a very good chance that it will work.  If it doesn't, there is also a good chance that you can re-arrange it, and it will sound just fine if you are good at editing.

Now you need drums.  Run another search for drums.  Soon you will have soloist performers, such as people who just want to play drums by themselves for 15 minutes on stage.  What about a band where each performer did a 15-minute solo set, prior to playing complete as a band?  Or where certain members sing songs about other members, and the ones the songs are about have spotlights that are red, while the ones singing the songs have the green spotlights?  That's synesthtastic!

That's what I envision, eventually for the Stereomedia server.  Even if it is humble in scope, it doesn't need to be an internationally recognized thing.  It doesn't need to become popularized, or marketed.  It just needs to work, and it most importantly needs to make people happy in order to make sense enough to have in our lives.

That is all.

Town Of New Haven Dot Org

Back in 1982, I was brought to this town by my parents because my father needed to finish college.  He became eventually a social worker, after being a carpenter for many years.  My mom worked as a typesetter for academic journals, and there was the sound of a typewriter in the background of the apartments we lived in, wherever we went.

I grew up in one of the roughest sections of town, because my parents, wonderful people they are, did not make the best decisions in real estate...  Or did they? Aside from the dangers and troubles of gangs and guns outside on our street, there was a perplexing situation downtown where it appeared as though a group of people transplanted part of England and put it right here in the United States.  New Haven is a beautiful town and I love it a whole lot.

I love it so much that I like taking pictures of it.  Before blogs and web photo albums and youtube, for that matter, I had a website called "TownOfNewHaven.Org" and it began officially in 2004, although I had been formulating and collecting ways of building the site prior to that.  I didn't tell anyone about its existence until 2006 or so, and by then it was very limited in its scope and effort to describe the world around me.

I got a job as a solar electrician in 2007 and was forced to shut down the site, because the job required every ounce of my effort to learn everything I needed to know, in addition to working the long hours week after week.  I maintained that job for 3 years, starting as an apprentice and then rising to the ranks of one of the highest paid employees in the company, which could be why I lost my job.

It wasn't that bad, though.  I looked at getting another job in solar, and realized I was looking at a serious paycut.  No one wanted to pay me what I was worth, so I got back into web design and graphic arts and music, which are things that many people would think are frivolous and unnecessary to the benefit of society.  That these are things which are self-indulgent and not worth really looking at.

Yes, most art is self-indulgent.  But Stereomedia and TownofNewHaven aren't really forms of art.  They're systems of information.  It's a philosophy of data management.  That's as boring as it sounds but I want you to take these ideas seriously, so the best way of accomplishing that is to put you to sleep.  Next thing you know, I'll use the phrase "social networking."  Ha.

What social networking lacks is the ability to get your material to its own private location.  What we forget is that these blogspots and these facebooks and these youtubes are not ours.  They belong to a private corporation who reserves the rights to revoke your membership at any time.  That's okay, it's fine because they keep the looneys from flooding the BB's with crazy nonsense, or something to that effect, but when it comes to normal people, we should have the ability to have our own web space where we keep our most valuable possessions, like our photographs.

Could you imagine the law suit if one of these major hosting services lost everyone's photographs for good?  Hmm.  That would be catastrophic.  Sounds like a great episode of Phiction.

Town Of New Haven holds on to stuff.  It's saved on a hard drive at certain points, and stored in a secure location with other historical artifacts.  These are kept as "time capsules" to remind us what life really was like, back in the day.  The material on these sites is kept within the bounds of social relevance.  It's all stuff that happens in public.  In addition, there are a few bonus features in there which have yet to really be maximized in terms of their usefulness.

So check it out, see what you can find, and think about making one for your hometown.
It's not that hard.  If you're interested, I'll mail you a folder kit for you to modify and call your own .

I have several parts from "Rusted Wheel" spinning in the background.  I'm scratching the Fatboys and at certain points, I'm aware that I get a bit lost in the scratching but you have to understand that I'm travelling the galaxy and there are more problems with my journey than expected.  As a consequence, it's either I crash into a meteor or my music gets sloppy.  Since I need to make it to your planet in order to take over as the tyrannical Chancellor of Music, and to stop the horrendous Aristotle from becoming popular, it has become necessary to make these sorts of concessions.  Sorry!

What better way to show appreciation for the amassed culture I've been given, than to remix my Legos and blame them for copyright infringement.

There's much, much more to this story.

Space Pirate, or SP as also referred, is a Lego Spaceman from another galaxy.  It is your job to determine what galaxy his is from, by following the patterns of his spacetravels.

Space Pirate downloads Earth Music in his ship.  He gets them by hacking Aristotle's computers.  Aristotle gets the Earth Music from the Radio Antenna equipment on his ship.  That antenna is directly linked to the transmission of the SETI program, here on Planet Earth.

Aristotle is searching for a RCA IN space portal so that he can emerge through one of the televisions on Earth.  He has been instructing a human being on how to modify a television set so that he can enter through it.  The human being who lets Aristotle into his room is unaware when the accident happens, and the equipment works!

In addition to being a terrible DJ, Space Pirate is also a terrible Emcee.

Space Pirate follows soon behind Aristotle, bringing with him an arsenal of mixed up and confused jarbles of the original material that was swiped from the Humans along in their travels.  His goal is to give you his interpretation of your culture by taking your material and reorganizing it anyway he wants.

The difference between LS Aristotle and Space Pirate

Both are Lego Spacemen.  Yes, this is true.  Aristotle has a white helmet, he doesn't have an eyepatch or stubble.  SpacePirate's facial hair is a little overgrown and something has happened to his eye, perhaps, unless there's a computer underneath the other eyepatch.  Who knows?  It's all kind of up for grabs, as far as plot.  Here's a video of the two of them, battling eachother:

The real difference between Aristotle and Space Pirate, in concert, is that Aristotle's music is all-original electronic, where as SpacePirate's contains an infinite amount of samples, and very little "orchestration." Both artists come from my many years fuddling around with Propellerheads Reason software, composing midi symphonies and remixes alike.

Dichotomizing my music between the songs with samples (Space Pirate)_ and the ones without (Aristotle) also keeps me from making the mistake of charging money for Space Pirate songs, which I cannot because I don't have the rights to the samples (heck, I don't even know if I have the rights to the Legos).  There are many people who are a bit confused by this.

I hope that I do a sufficient job of explaining, because the SpacePirate / LS Aristotle shows are supposed to be really awesome and amazing, once they're finally ready to be played.  Each will contain a different theme.  One will be more live electronic instruments, the other?  More of a mashup-remix type of thing.

You can get an idea of where I'm at with the mashups, by checking on the Spacepirate website.  As you can tell, like most pirates, SP is British in origin, and stands a chance at sweeping Aristotle under the rug by demeaning his original music as "irrelevant!"

Phiction RPG concept

Phiction was supposed to be a role-playing game where you are capable of watching multiple videos on screen while you through a spy story about kids in their teens, twenties and thirties who change the entire world around and make it a better place.

If you succeed at this game, you avert World War 3.  You must collect points in order to prevent that from happening.  If you fail, then, well I suggest you start over again.  The game begins in 1996.  It ends in 2001.

If you would like to essentially see more about this particular game, contact me directly and we can talk about it.  There is much more to this plot than you think.  The story is written spontaneously during the filming process, and the ideas are based on a "Plot Foundation."

Plot Foundation.

The plot foundation resembles more of a literary structure than a storyline.  It just says that you must have a certain number of characters to call it an episode, a certain number of explosions, running scenes, kissing scenes, these are all mandatory.  The entire project is not supposed to be higher than a PG-13 rating.  Kissing is okay, and if it implies something more sauntry, then that's ok as long as you don't release the sauntry stuff.  What's sauntry?  I mean sultry.  There ya go.

After the plot foundation is established, we begin filming sequences.  We will generate enough attention in the world by having cards that we pass out to people pertaining to where the film can be seen, which is online perhaps at its own website location, or on a YouTube Channel.  People we randomly meet can be featured in the films if they wish.  We will use minimal equipment and try to operate outside of the law where you ask people if you can film at their locations, unless we think that it's a location we might use a few times, in which it's better to request for permission (offering a small % based on the number of people who watch their episode).

Voting at Live Screenings VS Playing at Home.

The films can be released at a drive-in movie theater.  Patrons of the movie will be asked to participate in the direction of the plot by entering information with their smartphones while watching the film.  It would be suggested to plug in their phone to charge while using the app, because people without the application opened can't actually get to the vote on time.

The votes direct the plots in the live screenings, whereas the user decides the plot with the clicks.  This type of film emulates the TimeLangauge component.

Time Language is a visual language that assists you in understanding multilinear plot techniques and how to write them.  It was written a long time ago, by a robot from outerspace...

Solar Educational Website

Solar Electricity.  Even if the technology was affordable, we wouldn't
be prepared for it.  You realize that you're responsible for the electrical
system in your home.  And if you rent, then your landlord is responsible.
So if you have a difficult enough time understanding how your existing
electrical system functions, how in the world will you ever feel prepared
for adding additional features to it which generate all your power on
bright and sunny days?  That's what this guidebook is for.

That's why I made the cartoon, the flipbook, the efficiency wheel, the board game, the website, the video, and the teacher's reference.  After I lost my job as a solar installer for a Solar Company, I went on to write as much as I possibly could, because I knew that my old job was going the way of the dinosaur.

I thought that the best strategy to stay alive doing something solar energy-related was to produce a curriculum that best explained the  procedure, from site evaluation, to design, to installation.  There's even a little section on maintenance in there.  For Surely, Cris Shirley!  That's an associate of mine.  That's the other thing- I found great associates!  People who have credentials that want to work with me.  In essence, by degrees of association, I have several.

That said, now that we have combined forces with a few other people, let's get down to the busy side of things.  There's a ton of work to be done, and if solar energy was affordable and available for everyone, we would have to be ready to implement it with the speed in which we invaded Afghanistan.  I don't know why America rushes into these things.  This entire nation was founded in a hurry, and it seems that the only real slow decisions we ever made were in getting involved with WW1 and WW2.  Everything else from acquisition of the continent to launching a moon landing has been rush, rush rush.  It's time to slow the rush down and talk about solar, so hush.

I can show you what an inverter is. You might someday have one in your home.  Then again, you might also go to a friend's house, and impress your friend with your knowledge of their system.  There is so much cool stuff that you can do, just by learning!  It makes you more prepared.

The material on the website does not reflect the full content of the academic package.  It was developed in part with a little help from the Horace Mann School's John Dorr Nature Laboratory, working with the administrators there on how to dial in the material so that it can be taught.  It was also tested at the Foote School, in New Haven, where it received some e-mail applause from parents with children thought to be generally inattentive to lessons.  Believe me, this kid was glued to his seat when I started telling him about the harness saved me from falling off a rooftop.  That's part of the safety module.

Aether-Net.Org

Ah, the AetherNet.

This was an idea that I came up with in 1997, while playing Galaga at the local record shop, Cutlers.

At the time, Chatrooms and AIM was at peak popularity.  Many people would meet strangers in these chatrooms and have conversations.  At first, many of these conversations were actually intellectual.  I discovered that the atmosphere of anonynimity offered me the opportunity of going out on a limb, just to see what the 'public' had to offer in terms of feedback.

Then there was the concept of anonynms.  These were personality homonyms.  Just kidding.  But truly there were those who seemed just like many others.  It was like by allowing people to participate in this forum where all you are is a name, there were not all of these other things to hide behind, like wealth, beauty, height, weight.  Everyone was just their thoughts, exactly like the afterlife.

In the present day, we don't have anything equivolent to offer people.  The internet does not rule in favor of not being able to connect a person to the actions being conducted by that person.  Not by any scale.

That's why Chat Universes don't really exist.  I mean, yeah you can find them on gaming networks but everyone on them just wants to play. In the Aether-Net Chat universe, there is no game other than the normal games conducted by regular conversation.

How the Site Would Work

First, you Log In under an account.  Only the site administrators know what your true identity is, unless you go around giving everyone your first and last name.

Secondly, you pick a ship.  You can select from a variety of different spaceships.
In a later version, you can design your own.
In a version later than that, you can use your designed spaceship to play in "Battle Mode."
Later on, the "Battle Mode" becomes its own game.

Third, you pick a room.  The rooms are located as "Planets" in the Galaxy.  Each planet has a different theme, both visually and in the content of the conversation.

Once you get into a room, your ship begins to self-navigate.  You then control an icon which is set up to a feed contained by only the people in the room.  The Feed is the chat.  It's a group chat.  You can leave the room by exiting with your spaceship.  All the backgrounds are of great photographs of outer space.

Unless you're in the Aristotle room.  There's a big picture of Aristotle on the wall behind in the background.  I think our first competitor on Aether-Net will be Nintendo Chat Universe.  It would be not surprising, after this takes off, to see a number of different channels emerge with the pre-subcontext of interpersonal communication being the primary feature of their design.

Go to the theoretical website (design...crappy!!!) here.

Theoretical Questions?
Wouldn't Facebook be crazy if it linked up with SimCity to produce SimFacebook?  I would be terrified of that, because that's pretty much the point where nobody ever leaves the real house anymore (too busy leaving the virtual house...  letting the real homes get sold to the mortgage/soul owners).

I know that's what it seems like I'm proposing with Aether-Net, but if you see it from my perspective, the only time you'll ever find me surfing the Aether-Net is when I'm either at home in the winter and I'm catching a break, or I'm trying to spread the word about something.  Either way, find me.  Here's my ship.

Touring With Flipbooks

August 1-September 31st
Stereomedia founder and president, Ian Applegate, is touring the NorthEast with a new brand of flipbooks.

You can pre-order the first one, and vote for which one is printed.
Full information is available on Flipbook Island Dot Com.

If you've met me, maybe I handed you a flyer or a page from a book...  Just remember that these interpersonal connections are more real than these Facebook friendships.

However, if you'd like to befriend me on Facebook, you may click here...  Ha!  Just kidding.  Click here.

About this drawing
You can tour the northeast via motorcycle.  All you need is a backpack and a lot of motivation.  Many kids travel on a bicycle, or with no transportation at all.  I don't feel bad for them, nor do I feel like I'm any better.  I just have a different mode of transportation, which allows me to conduct my operations much easier.  One thing that I do not have are accommodations.  I will be living in alternative living spaces, which is fancy terminology for trees.

As you can see, the roads that I choose are not highways.  It is not fun to be on a highway while riding a motocycle.  People's AC coolant drips in your face, and the speed is a little too fast to recover from.  Plus, the 18-wheelers going 75 can throw you around, especially if your motorcycle was made by Radio Flyer.  So I stick to the local routes and the backroads.  It might take a little longer, but it's still much safer.  Sometimes the scenery is kind of nice, too.

This is a top-secret place to swim in CT.
